“The taste of limestone”
de la terre Viognier 2014 NZ
£15.00
In stock
Style Notes & Key Points
- An elegant and refined Viognier – fresh, crisp and clean with hints of minerality showcasing the limestone terroir of the vineyard. Bone dry.
- The aim with our winemaking was to direct the wine away from the typically fat / opulent mid-palate and replace it with a tighter and more linear structure. Hand picking and gentle pressing was the key to this โ along with retaining natural acidity to keep the wine fresh and ‘alive’.
- Weโve intentionally avoided the temptation to use oak or other complexities in order to showcase the Viognier grape variety and limestone minerality.
- Estate bottled and hand-labelled.
Tasting Notes
Delicate notes of citrus blossom, quince and lychee alongside a seam of flinty minerality on the nose. An elegant and refined balance of ripe, clean Viognier flavours and gentle acidity. Flavours of honey, lychee and light citrus dominate.ย The palate structure is tight and linear with a clean, crisp and long finish.
This wine continues to develop into a more complex and interesting wine with age. It wonโt ‘fall over’ anytime soon.
Secret Sommelier’s Comments
Who knew that Viognier could age and develop like this?!! Soft persistent acidity, Lovely ripe stone fruit flavours with expressive apricot notes, Honey, Citrus blossom and a mineral finish that shows great length. 2014 was a fantastic vintage for Viognier. Growing season was warm and dry. Carefully selected bunches were harvested by hand into small crates and pressed very gently. This was the key to make a great wine that could age gracefully. The aim of the winemaker was to direct the wine away from the typically oily โfatโ/opulent mid-palate style into a more focused, linear and tighter style. An everyday/every occasion wineโ
