Reserve Viognier

The Winemaker’s favourite

Tasting notes

A flinty/mineral nose with citrus notes. A rich and creamy attack with a linear progression through the mid-palate into a long dry finish. A light seam of acidity to support the fruit. Power and elegance side by side.

Style notes

  • Grapes from low-yielding vines grown on an very steep north-facing limestone terrace – the vines are stressed.
  • A complex, linear and tightly-structured ‘non-fruity’ style of Viognier.
  • Style defined by the two words – ‘linearity’ and ‘minerality’. A food wine.
  • Aimed at slow, graceful ageing in the bottle.
  • Grapes handpicked and pressed gently as though we are making Champagne base to suppress the mid-palate fruit and ‘fat’ and instead harness the limestone minerality and bring a tight/long/linear structure.
  • 100% barrel fermented in non-new French barriques to create some rusticity and complexity in the aroma and flavour profiles rather than to achieve oak flavour.
  • Total production 1448 bottles.
  • Estate produced, bottled and labelled. Individually hand-numbered bottles.

Secret Sommelier's comments

A sensational Viognier that would stand up well against Condrieu. The gentle winemaking process has ensured that this wine exudes elegance. It has power whilst remaining restrained and focused. The palate is linear and precise, aimed towards minerality which supports the flesh of white stone fruit flavours well. Can almost taste the limestone terrace on which the low yielding vines are planted which shows how well integrated the oak is. A wine that expresses its origin rather than the method of wine making/use of barrels.
